Benjamin Stohlmann, photographed by Manuel Lossau

Benjamin Stohlmann (*1981, Berlin) works primarily with alcohol ink. Over many years, he has developed a personal way of working in which the medium is built up, directed, partially removed and continuously reworked in layers. The result is a body of work characterised by clearly structured areas of colour, organic forms and a high level of detail.

Each painting begins without a predetermined image. Every decision responds to the one before it, as the ink is applied, moved, reduced and reworked until the individual elements resolve into a coherent composition.

His works do not reveal themselves at first glance. Every return to the image offers a different discovery.
